FAQ - Kumon Work

Why is the work so repetitive?
It has been said that it takes 10,000 hours of practice in order the master a skill.  Athletes must train before the game.  Musicians must practice before the concert.  At Kumon, we want our students to master the foundation skills.  There are no short cuts.  They need to practice through repetition.  Ultimately, these skills will help them succeed in school and beyond.

Why is the work so easy?
For new students to Kumon, we place them in a comfortable starting point in the program.  This builds their confidence as they get used to the daily routine.  This is a very important stage in the students’ learning process and should not be bypassed.  As students progress, they will move to new and more challenging material.

Why is there so much/not enough homework?
The Kumon instructor assigns homework, carefully balancing between the student’s need for progress and minimizing struggles at home.  If you have concerns about the amount of homework, please speak to the instructor.

Will my child get help with his school work?
Kumon’s math and reading programs are programs that stand on their own.  At Kumon, we do not teach specifically to material your child may receive in school.  And we certainly would not be synchronized with the school’s curriculum.  You should not attend Kumon for direct help with your child’s school work.  Kumon builds the foundation skills which will ultimately help you child with their school work.

Why isn’t my child receiving help in class?
New concepts are very often scheduled during class time. It is normal for students to encounter problems or have questions about their work. We do have instructors and assistants roaming the classroom to provide help. However, we also encourage all students to study the examples provided in order the "figure it out". It's all part of the goal of teaching students how to learn on their own.

Why do I have to mark my child work at home?
As your child progresses and learns new material, they are bound to make mistakes.  Receiving feedback once or twice a week during their Kumon class time is good.  But to really get the best results, daily feedback through home marking is encouraged.

We understand families are busy.  We only ask families to mark Math homework which should only take 5 minutes a day.  Answer books are available from the centre.   Reading homework may be more challenging to mark, so we can provide that in the centre.
